From indulging in a dressing-up box specially curated with clothing from the period the book was written in 1905 children were treated to storytelling excerpts from the Popular Railway Children story. Station staff were on-hand to show people around the station which features some classic architecture before taking a walk on the specially designed Railway Children walk.
Taking in local landmarks and references to the book along the way attendees were truly immersed in the world of the author by a local guide from Grove Park Community centre.
Supporting the event were Hornby, Brio and Plus-Plus with train themed toys for the children to interact with and create their own Railway based tales.
Lee O'Dwyer, Station Manager Grove Park:
"We were delighted to host this event at Grove Park station, a place deeply intertwined with E. Nesbit's classic tale, 'The Railway Children.' It's wonderful to see our station being used to celebrate the magic of early 20th-century rail travel and the rich history that inspired this story. We enjoyed welcoming families to step back in time and experience the charm of 'Railway Children' land." Lee O’Dwyer, Station Manager Grove Park
Celebrating two centuries of rail travel in the UK the Railway200 this is just one event as part of a wider program of commemoration.
