As part of a £78 million programme to improve passenger experience, free WiFi is now available on Southeastern trains.

Starting today, Southeastern passengers will benefit from a new, free WiFi system, which is being progressively rolled out as part of our £78 million programme of investment to improve the journey experience for our customers.

Over the next few months, each and every train unit in Southeastern’s fleet – Metro, Mainline and High Speed – is being progressively fitted with the system, which can be used across our network in Kent, Sussex and south-east London.

At the time of writing, around two-thirds of Southeastern’s 392-strong fleet of train units have already been fitted with Wi-Fi, with the remainder expected to follow by no later than June 2018.

Mark Johnson, Engineering Director said: “We’re thrilled to provide this free WiFi for our passengers. We know that this is what they’ve been asking for, so our engineers have worked day and night to install the system”.

Dedicated installation teams at Southeastern’s depots at Ashford, Ramsgate and Slade Green have worked around the clock to fit every train in the fleet – a process that will continue until June to cover all trains. For many of Southeastern’s engineering team, it’s the biggest project they’ve been involved in.

Southeastern’s WiFi network can be found easily. Look for ‘Southeastern_WiFi’ in your available networks. There is no need to provide an email address. It will enable email without large attachments, surfing the internet, connectivity for smartphones and tablets and on-train stored content such as basic travel and timetable information.

Working together with the Department for Transport and other partners, we hope that our passengers will enjoy the benefits that this will bring by giving them easier access to the internet, travel information, emails and social media.

Notes to editors

  1. A daily free usage allowance of 50MB will be available to each passenger. The strength and speed of the WiFi will be affected by the number of users at any one time and how it is being used, as well as geography. Some lines, such as the Bromley North branch, the Isle of Sheppey branch and the Medway Valley line, will receive WiFi coverage in April 2018.
  2. The WiFi isn’t designed for streaming films or TV programmes, and we advise these should be downloaded at home.
  3. Many of our trains travel through tunnels or areas of limited connectivity where the WiFi connection may be lost. A signal strength map is available on the Southeastern website at https://www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/travel-information/on-board/wifi, with a dedicated helpline number available for technical queries: 0208 028 0393.
