Could you see yourself keeping trains running smoothly, helping customers on their journeys or even driving a train one day?
If so Southeastern’s upcoming recruitment open day in Tonbridge should be your next stop. Southeastern is actively recruiting for new staff at Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge stations and is holding a recruitment open day on Tuesday 12 August.
This will be a rare chance to learn about the great rewards of working on the railway and meet some of the station staff who keep our railways running, including gate line staff member Alexander Mills.
Born and raised in Crowborough, Alexander’s fascination with the railway began early.
“I’ve always had an interest in railways,” the 22-year-old said. “As a child, I volunteered at the Crowborough Miniature Railway, then went on to help out at both the Bluebell Railway and the Spa Valley Railway.
“My grandfather worked at Selhurst depot during the British Rail days. We were very close, and he was a big inspiration for me. We used to talk about his time on the railway all the time.
”After working various hospitality jobs, Alexander saw a vacancy for a gate line and platform role at Southeastern earlier this year. He applied – and was successful.“Like a lot of people, when I came to choose my career, it was very difficult as there are so many options. However I have had a lifelong love of the railway, so I feel right at home.
“There’s a real sense of camaraderie here, and I love how many ways there are to grow. I’d love to keep progressing – maybe move into a conductor or station management role one day. But I’m happy to see where the tide takes me.”
“There’s so much opportunity. If you’re passionate about people, engineering, or helping communities, the railway has a place for you.”
Demand to join Southeastern is growing exceptionally quickly, with more than 30,000 job applications in the last year alone, compared to just over 14,000 the year before. Alongside a rewarding and dynamic career, benefits of working with Southeastern include competitive salaries, a final salary pension scheme, unlimited free travel and a comprehensive training scheme.
To find out more, pop in to the Southeastern Open Day at Tonbridge Castle on 12 August anytime between 10am and 3pm. There will also be stands where you can learn more about the great rewards and incentives on offer, and, if you like what you’ve seen and heard, our Recruitment team will be there to show you how to apply for roles and what to expect as part of the recruitment journey.Ends
