  • Final chance to book your space at Southeastern’s 'Railway 200' Open Day on Sunday, 24th August.
  • Discover the engineering secrets behind Kent’s high-speed train fleet, from laser scans to bolts bigger than your wrist.
  • Meet the engineers, drivers and depot staff who keep Britain moving and see innovative rail tech alongside heritage steam legends like the 35028 Clan Line

With just days to go, Southeastern is inviting families, rail fans and residents to step inside Ashford’s Train Maintenance Centre for a rare behind-the-scenes celebration of 200 years of railway history.

For one day only, attendees will have the chance to take part in fun, family-friendly activities and rub shoulders with the drivers, engineers, and maintenance staff responsible for running one of the largest and busiest depots in the south east.

Alongside displays of model Hornby trains and miniature roundabout rides, visitors will be able to see a snapshot of rail history from heritage trains like the Clan Line steam engine to the special Railway 200 Class 395 'Javelin' train 395015 and the Network SouthEast Networker – 465908.

There’s plenty to uncover; including how the depot uses 21 tons of sand each year to keep trains running safely in wet conditions, or why one of the 230,000 parts in stock includes a bolt that’s 66mm wide and 260mm long — bigger than most people’s wrists.

Jim Shead, Ashford Depot Manager, Southeastern:

“It is very rare that we can open our doors to families and residents, and we are excited to show the incredible work that goes on behind the scenes in one of the most important depots in the south east.

“We hope this event will inspire young minds to consider a rewarding career in the railway as well as providing a fun and interesting day for the whole family.”

The Open Day has been made possible thanks to the support of partners, Eversholt Rail, who have helped to cover the operating costs of the day.

Mary Kenny, Chief Executive Officer, Eversholt Rail said:

“We are delighted to be supporting Southeastern’s Open Day at Ashford Depot this weekend. This is a fantastic opportunity for the community to be able to see a selection of railway vehicles from the past and present and join the industry in celebrating Railway 200.”

Alongside the host of trains and technology, there will be stands and activities including:

  • The Southeastern Recruitment Team will be available to showcase the fantastic and varied career opportunities available, perfect for those considering joining the railway industry.
  • Southeastern Safeguarding Team: Hear about their initiatives to protect our customers.
  • See the re-railing team carry out an on-site demonstration.
  • Kent Fire & Rescue Service
  • A special Hornby stand will be available throughout the day, giving visitors the opportunity to browse and purchase from their extensive range of model trains, including the special Railway 200 high-speed train.
  • Visitors can see stands run by:
    • Art Sea Craft Sea
    • Railed themed pin badges.
    • On the Rails Prints
    • Ashford museum
  • And little ones can enjoy a range of activities, including miniature roundabout rides.

Southeastern will not make any profit from ticket sales. All proceeds will go toward covering event costs, with any remaining funds donated to five Railway 200 charities: Alzheimer’s Research UK, Railway Benefit Fund, Railway Children, Railway Mission, and the Transport Benevolent Fund CIO.

The Open Day runs between 10 am and 4 pm on Sunday 24th August. Visitors are encouraged to check train services before travelling to help ensure an on-time arrival at the event.

All trains are subject to availability and may change before the event.
