Ditch the car and explore the south-east by train this bank holiday weekend

Ditch the car and explore the south-east by train this bank holiday weekend: A Southeastern train passing Shakespeare Beach in Dover

  • Full service operating across most of the Southeastern network
  • Extra services to the coast to help drivers beat the queues
  • Save money on tickets with Advance fares, Kids for a Quid and GroupSave

Southeastern is encouraging drivers to ditch their cars and take the train this bank holiday weekend.

With a full service operating across most of the network, additional trains and extra carriages will make it easier for people to explore the south-east while beating the traffic.

The RAC estimates this weekend will be the busiest August bank holiday on the roads in nine years, with 19.2 million car leisure journeys between Friday and Monday.

Travelling by Southeastern is one of the most environmentally sustainable ways to explore Kent, south-east London and East Sussex.

Government data shows electric rail travel accounts for only 0.14% of transport emissions in Kent, with one Southeastern train removing up to 500 cars from the roads.

Kids for a Quid makes it more affordable for families to enjoy a day out – with up to four children able to travel for £1 each when travelling with a fare paying adult. Up to nine adults travelling together can also save with GroupSave.

Over the weekend, direct services will operate between Cannon Street and Ramsgate via Woolwich Arsenal and Dartford, connecting more stations directly to Whitstable, Herne Bay, Margate and Broadstairs.

There will also be an extra carriages on some of the busiest trains towards London, as well as to the Kent coast and Hastings.

Julian Moosai, Southeastern's Head of Service Delivery, said:

"There are so many wonderful attractions and beautiful beaches across London and the south-east and the long weekend provides a great opportunity to explore the area by train.

"Rail travel is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel – and our extra services makes it easier to leave the car at home and avoid the queues this bank holiday."

Southeastern will operate a Saturday timetable on Saturday 24 August and Monday 26 August. A Sunday service will operate on Sunday 25 August.

There will be no trains via Denmark Hill this weekend with services diverted to Cannon Street or via Herne Hill.

On Sunday, some early-morning services between Tonbridge and Sevenoaks will be replaced by buses.
