New Gravesend station cycle hub will hire out electric bikes and Brompton cycles

Press Release   •   May 16, 2016 07:01 BST

The Gravesend Cycle Hub, which will open this summer, will create 224 cycle parking spaces.

It will include the installation of novel two-tier racks and a decked and secure compound off Rathmore Road, adjacent to the new footbridge and lifts.

As well as making a number of Brompton and electric bikes available for hire, the hub will offer maintenance and repair services.

In fact the hub is specifically designed to encourage more people to take up cycling and to allow passengers to explore the local area.

Southeastern's Managing Director David Statham said: “Our cycle hub will allow more passengers to store their bikes easily and safely but will also help get more people out and about on two wheels.

"The popularity of cycling has been rising across the network, so it’s great to see Southeastern improving facilities for cyclists.”

Transport minister Robert Goodwill added: “Secure cycle spaces at rail stations are critical to make cycling the natural choice for short journeys.

"The fantastic facilities that Gravesend will offer from later this year will help get more people on bikes, improving health and cutting congestion.

"We have provided £29m to improve cycling facilities at hundreds of railway stations across England since 2012 and will continue investing in dedicated routes and better infrastructure to make cycling safer and easier.”

Plans have been developed in partnership with the Department for Transport (DfT), Kent County Council, Gravesham Borough Council, Sustrans and local charity the Cyclopark Trust.

Funding comes from the DfT’s Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) cycle fund (£682,000) and Kent County Council’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund (£539,000).

The compound will feature restricted swipe-card access to 180 secure spaces and a further 44 spaces will be available outside.

The Easylift+ system features gas springs to assist lifting and lowering of the upper level’s lightweight and durable hot-dipped galvanised steel frame. Security is being further bolstered with better lighting and improved CCTV.
